The TSL Netflix Guide: Horror: Part II

By Jameson Brown · September 22, 2014

Forge ahead with this Netflix Horror Guide: Part II and begin crossing off calendar dates with some of these blood-drenched classics. The majority of these films fall under the contemporary category, but are deserving in their own right. Not to mention, a true classic to cap off the list.

10. Scream (1996)

Wes Craven's "return film" spawned a massive new franchise, while catapulting Neve Campbell's 90's career and solidifying Courteney Cox's feature film status. Some people still to this day do not think this movie was a satirical jab at the entire genre of horror. It was. And it did a good job. What made Craven's effort successful was the ability to juggle satire, comedy and genuine scares.

6. Children of the Corn (1984)

Not the best paced horror film, but definitely one with an eerie premise that slowly infiltrates you as you watch it until the bitter end. If you have time, be sure to read the short story by Stephen King; this story on the actual page translates better than on the screen.

5. The Stuff (1985)

The Stuff is what gives B-movies a good name. It has an absurd plot with some absurd characters, but it entertains throughout its entire runtime. The Stuff is a pudding like substance that tastes like Heaven in your mouth. But there is one little hunch to eating it: it eats you back. The strange gets stranger in this battered up B-movie with substance.

2. We Are What We Are (2013)

Who would have ever thought that a severe rain storm could cause so many problems for one family? Well, it does here. And the problem is something that is beyond foul. This film is not for those whose stomachs ache easily.

1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

A classic that still stands the test of time due to its cultural relevance and commentary alongside its overall engaging premise. Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a staple in sci-fi horror and should be viewed multiple times by anyone who deems themself a cinephile. Be sure to check out the 1978 version, as it does a great job on the subject matter as well.
