Ally Sinyard

Ally is currently in her final year studying Film and Literature at the University of Warwick, England. She's an aspiring screenwriter, who is looking forward to graduation so that she can no longer have the "should I do some writing or do this very important essay" debate. There is a special place in her heart for Nicolas Cage, cheese on toast, Edgar Wright and David Finche but she hates pretentious people and apples. She enjoys clever films but also loves to sit down and watch "The Expendables," surrounded by an assortment of tasty treats. She also uses the phrase "tasty treats" a lot in conversation.

Don't Try To Get A Job – Make One!

Screenwriting Script Tips
So you're in Hollywood trying to land your next gig (or first) in order to pay the rent for that ant infested studio apartment on the South side of Korea Town. And when I say gig, I don't necessarily mean as a writer. Of course you are a writer, but unless you're one of the anointed ones lucky enough to sell a spec script right off the bat, you need to work in the industry, partly for necessity- to pay the bills - but partly (and more importantly) to make connections. Networking is relationship gold. Ideas, spirit, creativity, charisma, charm... show it! Make them see…

Five Plot Point Breakdowns

Rewriting

Screenplay Writing
A few years ago, Richard Stayton, the editor in chief of Written By magazine, and I had a screening of A History of Violence for our students at Glendale College, and the screenwriter, Josh Olson, came in for a Q&A after the film. The questions were the standard “Who inspires you?”, “How do you research?”, “Do you write for specific actors?”, and of course the always expected, “How do I get an agent?” Olson’s answers were for the most part standard and forgettable. To be honest, I couldn’t even begin to tell any details of what was discussed, expect for one thing, and…
