Elementary: Series Premiere

Written by Becky Kifer Sunday, September 30, 2012, 8:05 AM

Earlier this year when the buzz for Elementary began (“buzz” being the kinder term for “collective melodramatic freak-out”), CBS needed its own eye logo to watch its back. Sherlock Holmes in America, John Watson turned into a woman—sound the battle alarm! Rally the Baker Street Irregulars! I can almost imagine it now: non-canonical deerstalkers torn asunder, blood on the cobblestones, singed bushy mustaches still smoking at both ends.

The Big Bang Theory: Season 6 Premiere

Written by Andrew Stires Saturday, September 29, 2012, 12:56 PM

By the end of The Big Bang Theory season five, I was no longer laughing, apathetic towards the characters, and pretty much ready call it quits. Yet here I am, ready to give the show one last shot. Am I hopeful the writers may still be able to salvage a once funny show, or did I simply volunteer to write this review because, well, someone needs to write it? It's a little bit of both, and unfortunately the first episode of season six, entitled “The Date Night Variable,” proves not much progress has been made making this once geektacular show laugh-out-loud funny again; instead, we're still mired in the bleak swamplands of relationship hell. Last season ended with Howard (Simon Helberg) blasting into space to begin his stay at the International Space Station. Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) were squabbling about Leonard's ill-timed proposal. Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) were navigating the perils of dating Sheldon. Raj (Kunal Nayyar) was being Raj, still searching for someone to love. Season six begins right where we left off, punishing viewers with the same, tired story lines and little forward momentum.

The Mindy Project: Series Premiere

Written by Liana M. Silva Saturday, September 29, 2012, 6:03 AM

Mindy Kaling, of The Office fame, has moved on from the popular NBC comedy to her own primetime show on FOX titled The Mindy Project, which premiered this past Tuesday, September 25th. The Mindy Project has a tough act to follow, for it starts right after the cult comedy hit New Girl with Zooey Deschanel. “How is Mindy Kaling going to pull this one off?” I wondered.

Modern Family: Season 4 Premiere

Written by Tony LaScala Friday, September 28, 2012, 7:50 AM

The season four premiere episode of Modern Family, “Bringing Up Baby” began at a quietly dramatic pace that failed to pick up steam until about mid-episode. While the premiere offered few laughs, the laughs offered were of the gut busting kind and well worth the half hour watch.

Ben and Kate: Series Premiere

Written by Meredith Alloway Thursday, September 27, 2012, 12:58 PM

It seems Fox is lining up two shows back to back on Tuesday nights that are oddly similar. “Odd” has proven to be the secret to success: Jess on New Girl, who’s oddly adorable and now Ben on Ben and Kate who’s oddly charming. They’re both fish-out-of-water adults whom we love to watch make mistakes because somehow they continue to make us laugh.

Character Flaws: Better Conflict

Screenwriting Script Tips
Now, as far as creating the specific conflict for your main character, some obstacles are external, some internal, some both, but the best obstacles are those that are created by the characters themselves. This is why establishing very specific character flaws is so important in the first act: hubris, doubt, narcissism, jealousy, overconfidence, etc... because it is with the character's own flaw(s) that will get him or her into even more trouble. And more trouble is exactly what you want - self induced trouble is a recipe for success. To put it another way, it is…
