Sometimes, the good directors can be real jerks. They know that their work is in high demand, so they run around to all the competing production companies playing this sick game of “who can satisfy my obscene requests in a manner that a person of my caliber deserves?” Luckily, an intern does not have to deal with a douchebag like this face-to-face, but on occasion, I do have to make some arrangements for them.
Right before I am about to leave one afternoon, one of the owner’s of the company asks my boss if he can ‘borrow’ me for a minute. Doug replies, “Of course you can!” I set my bag down, take off my coat, and listen to my directions. I am to find a restaurant that is open for breakfast at 7am, on the west side (specifically off the 405 and the 10), that serves whole grain, organic pancakes! This should not be too hard considering the health conscious atmosphere of the west side, right? Well, this took me a good two hours to find.
I utilized every tool I could to find this pancake utopia. I Googled it, I called friends, I called restaurants, but there was always one thing missing, “we have organic pancakes, but they’re not whole grain…we have whole grain, but we’re not open until 9…we have them on the menu, but don’t serve breakfast during the week…” Because this was taking a lot longer than I had expected, I ran to the kitchen to pour myself a cup of coffee. While I was down there, I got to talking with the mid-week dwellers who knew exactly which director this was for, and out of pity, they offered to help in my search for this mythical place.
About an hour and a half into it, Lenny, the owner, checks in on my progress. After dozens of phone calls, and the aid of two other individuals, I can only muster up one place: it is south of the 10, opens at 6am, and has organic, buttermilk pancakes. Lenny says, “I’m sick of this shit. That bastard will have to make do with that! Thanks sweetheart.”
When I return to the office the day after this meeting is supposed to take place, I find out that the director lived up to his reputation as a douchebag: he cancelled at the last minute. Lenny was at the restaurant when he did. I heard he ordered the pancakes…
