Box Office Recap — January 16, 2018

By Tom Dever · January 16, 2018

With a move into China and $300MM-plus foreign box office, the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle train keeps rolling with no end in sight. While many predicted the billion-dollar boon of the latest installment of the Star Wars mega-franchise, even the most optimistic predictions probably didn’t anticipate Jumanji having this much staying power.

While having perpetual box office windfall Dwayne Johnson in the lead certainly helps, clearly there is more to the success of Jumanji. It has the added bonus of being based on a somewhat well-known children’s picture book from the early 80’s and a successful adaptation of the 1990s, Jumanji (1995- $262,000,000 at the box office).

The 2017 iteration has the elements of several high-concept tropes. It’s not that we haven’t seen any of these before…the elements of trapped in a video game (Tron)…the mismatch body swap (The Hot ChickFreaky FridayBig and so so many others)…and, of course, the proven concept of the original…but the creative team has brought them all together in a way that feels new and is clearly resonating with audiences.

Please note: All box office grosses listed below are domestic.
