Tiffany Shlain: Creativity, Content Creation and Charisma

By Jameson Brown · October 29, 2014

We're swimming in a time of interesting waters when it comes to storytelling, creativity, content creation and overall technology. For me, this all loops back to one simple idea: telling a genuine story. From screenwriting to short stories to feature lengths, we all want to deliver the story we know best. Tiffany Shlain, a true shaker in my opinion, is a prime example of all of the above. Tiffany is the creator of the Emmy nominated show The Future Starts Here and is also the founder of the Webby Awards. I got a chance to chat with her about her show, what it means to be a storyteller with today's technology and balancing all of this out so that life is not overstuffed with pings and notifications.

J: Hey Tiffany, thanks for taking the time for the call.

T: Thank you! I'm glad I'm now connected with you. How are you doing?

J: Yeah, of course. I am doing well.

T: So, have you seen some of the show?

J: Yes, I have. I saw Season 2 just kicked off, correct?

T: Yes it has. It just premiered last week.

J: I'd love to hear more about the show – that'd be great.

T: I was initially a little skeptical at first, but then it turned out to be a dream partnership. It features technology, philosophy and science and my goal was to really elevate the conversation around that. And it's so exciting to see, AOL is this huge platform, Season 1 had over 20 million views and we were nominated for an Emmy Award this year.

J: I saw! That's great.

T: Yeah, it's a really exciting time. We really get room to play with story structure, and not only in the five minute films, which is pretty much what they've been averaging. But these episodes can be watched entirely on their own OR they can be watched in a row.
