Rachid Bouchareb (famed for Days of Glory, and an impressive canon) comes out swinging big with his adaptation of Jose Giovanni’s 1973 film Two Men in Town. With a reformation story at its core, mantled by a dusty Western setting, the story follows William Garnett as he seeks out a new life that does not consist of violence, murder and anger. He is constantly prodded by the town Sheriff Bill Agati, an officer who cannot bury a crime that occured almost two decades prior. As William reenters his old community, Sheriff Agati drifts closer and closer into his life, causing friction along the way.
It’s good to see high-caliber actors take on gritty roles that require bare bones skill and collaboration. With Keitel and Whitaker, we couldn’t ask for two better leads in these opposing roles. The story is engaging. The trailer is well cut. And resolution, be it good or bad, is inevitable.
