5 Morning Rituals That Will Boost Your Writing

By Jameson Brown · September 24, 2014

The morning writing routine is a sacred one. And once started, it, hopefully, is a running train throughout the day that ends with a decent final product. But how do you get to this point? What do you do beforehand to calibrate your mind?

5. Waking Up Earlier Than Early

Although it goes against Banksy’s philosophy that “people who get up early cause war, death and famine,” it is still good to get up before the sun does. You will be surprised how many strange ideas you have running through your head at this hour. A lot of these, with a cup of coffee to aid, can be injected into the story you might be writing at the time.

4. Exercise (Push-ups Specifically)

The good thing about immediate morning exercise is that it kicks your ass and scares you awake. It can also be scaled. You can do a lot. You can do a little. After doing this, the mind is cleaned out and primed ready to go.

3. Shower Stories

The shower is one of the absolute best places to discuss your story…with yourself. Talk it out. Put music on to get the brain going as you talk it out. Anytime you can verbalize your story, either to yourself or someone listening, do it. Extracting plot points in any way helps you become a better editor.

2. Watch Your Favorite Film Clip Before Starting

Writing is one of the most inspired activities around. Get inspired by giving yourself a movie drip that will carry you into your own story. Be wary, though; getting too caught up with others’ films will disable you from tackling your own.

1. Make Your Environment

A writer’s environment is a temple. Wherever it may be. However it may look. Where the job is done is vital to the end product that comes out in the end. Cater your environment to how you relax. Do you focus more with OR without distraction? Do you prefer a hard or soft chair? These things matter. Adjust them.
