Robert McKee (whose biggest credit is a TV movie titled Abraham) states that a new writer should not be constrained by plot points that land on specific pages. He is passionate about this NOT happening. He then goes on to state, "Well, there is rhythm." And that is the line we were waiting to hear.
We agree (somewhat) that one should not limit his or her screenplay to beats by page numbers. But hey, if that person is a beginner and it helps their pacing, who is to say that is a bad thing? We also strongly push plot points in a screenplay, but we ALSO ENCOURAGE to use those as foundation for later (after becoming more experienced) bending the rules.
Ultimately, we agree with Mr. McKee, but we do put strong value on the plot point system and the sequence and acts layers that act as the guardrails.
