Karen McCullah (Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You) goes deep into her breaking into the screenwriting industry, the first screenplay she wrote (and did not sell) and how she learned to write.
McCullah taps into a great point that all spec screenwriters should know and learn: the chances of you selling one of the first things you write is beyond slim. These are test runs – ways to get the process and dance down. Yes, there are success stories we hear; but for every success story there are 1,000 other stories of failure.
What should you take from this? KEEP WRITING. Build up a diverse library of screenplays to have ready to go when the time is right. Only having one or two scripts is not enough.
