1. INCITING INCIDENT
Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) gets his big break recording “Cry, cry, cry” at a record label, and at one of his first shows on tour, Johnny meets June Carter (Reese Witherspoon) face to face for the first time and is struck by her. (00:31:03)
2. LOCK IN (End of Act One)
Following their first meeting, June and Johnny have a conversation at a diner, and it is clear that June has been the adoration of Johnny’s life when he tells her “I kept track of you, I listened to your voice my whole life.” (00:40:16)
3. FIRST CULMINATION (Midpoint)
June leaves the tour tired of the guys’ drinking and Johnny’s behavior, but after some time she rejoins on a much larger headlining tour. After much flirtation, Johnny and June sleep together for the first time. (01:16:48)
4. MAIN CULMINATION (End of Act Two)
After Johnny’s tour is canceled, he is caught smuggling drugs into the country and his wife Vivian leaves him, taking the kids. He hits an all time low and June, seeing that Johnny’s health depends on it, decides to help him by flushing his pills and staying with him through his withdrawal and recovery. (01:48:11)
5. THIRD ACT TWIST
After many rejections, Johnny asks June to marry him on stage in front of an audience, and June finally agrees. (02:08:27)
