Film Courage sits down with UCLA professor Richard Walter (a highly engaging educator) as he discusses the basics of those first steps in the screenwriting process. He discusses the element of surprise in writing (yes, good writing, of any kind, should have surprises erupt that not even the writer expects) and how that is a fundamental piece in the beginning stages. Being able to embrace those surprises and potentially go the route they take a writer is a must.
Walter is a veteran screenwriter with some of his former students being Oscar winners Alexander Payne (Sideways) and Dustin Lance Black (Milk)
