Clint Eastwood's American Sniper has laid somewhat low this awards season (so far). But awards aside, this subject matter seems to fit Eastwood's directing style well, but that's if he can get back to how he used to edit (Jersey Boys and J. Edgar were a trainwreck).
Eastwood does things in a highly specific way: his lighting, his editing and his slow burn directing style. So, if he can find that magic again, we think he can make a comeback with this film. Cooper is an actor who the role must fit like a glove. If it doesn't, he has a hard time spreading his wings (and it typically comes off as parody). If he does have "that role," he soars.
Let's hope all of these points are hit on this go-round because, honestly, we are ready for an Eastwood win.
