Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are rising talents, both in their writing and directing. Parallel to Brad Bird, they tackle diverse topics (a rare and challenging task in Hollywood) and execute them well. Between Crazy, Stupid, Love., I Love You Phillip Morris and penning Bad Santa, these two collaborators understand their partnership and what styles play to their strengths. Focus, though, feels too flashy – too saturated with style. The rise of "luxury filmmaking" is spitting out films like this; it will be a challenge to see how they break the mold.
